Hello. My normal method when creating clothes is to hammer out an opacity map first, then texture out the whole thing second. sometimes it takes me forevvvvver to get my opacity map down perfectly, though. I normally spend more time on my opacity maps than I do on my textures...but I am really not as talented as many and it takes me a while to get things to look the way I want them to in a quick manner.

What works best for everyone else, and can we please share some tips? I need to cut down how much time it takes me to create clothing lol.

For me, it's always the map first. To my mind, it's the easiest because it is just the basic shape. Texture is where the product becomes a realistic (or not) garment with the look of fabric and depth (wrinkles, shadows, a visually tactile experience).

I find that making my texture go a pixel or two beyond my opacity map, makes for cleaner, crisper edges as well.

thanks for moving, DarkAngel. I am sorry I brainfarted that and you had to move this! Embarassed

Yes, I also go beyond the opacity map when I am making my stuffies as well for the most part. I just hate how long it takes me to make a map. lol.

For me it depends on what I'm making. A bikini will start with the opacity then color it to make my texture but a tattoo will start with the tat and then be turned into the opacity when it's finished. So each project will have it's own method and order... it just depends on what I think will be easier and smoother in the end.

I always do my opacity map or maps first. There is no point in working on getting the shading and highlighting right if the mapping doesn't even look right. That and you could end up spending time on parts of the texture that will be mapped out if you don't have something showing you where what is.

For clothing items, I always do the opacity map, first. For furniture items, it all depends upon what I'm making. For example, if I make a tree, I will make the tree first because the opacity map for it can be readily made from the tree map. In "most" cases, however, I generally create the opacity map, first.

I make the texture first then the opacity map if i ever decide to change what the texture shapes like i woudlnt need to go through the hassle on changing the opacity.

I guess I usually do the opacity first too, though there have been some things where I didn't have a final image in my head about what I was going to make, and I just kind of mess around and draw the item texture-first and then worry about the shape afterwards.

I start on the map and then in the next window I have the texture and in the next window I have imvu. Then I work with both trying it out every change in client. The op map is usually finished first but I change my mind so often it will more often than not be changed again and again. ^_^

I always do texture first.

I work on my clothing textures over my skin texture, so I can leave the opacity at 100% (for skin tight clothing anyway) and make sure everything looks how I want it to first, that way when I am done all I have to do is duplicate my layer group, merge it together and add a color overlay of pure white and put it over a black background. I tend to change things mid-project so it's a pain for me to do opacity first because I know I'll end up changing it at least once before I am done.

No way can I make the texture first. I make the map first. It is my building block and map to where everything should and will be. If I decide to change the outfit, which most times I will, I just go back and add on to or subtract from the opacity. It usually takes me quite a while to do my opacities too and have often wondered how I can cut down the time.

Unless your doing something that requires a simple/average opacity like jeans or bikini, I don't see how someone can put up decorations without a wall being there first.

I will be watching to see if someone has a better way.

For me they are made at the same time, the texture's layers become the opacity map.

Opacity map first.
I always have problems lining things up correctly and in the beginning I always textured it first but something didn't line up and I had to fix the opacity map and the texture. It was more work.
